Trackers & Immobilisers... what's the difference?

Trackers

A tracker helps locate and recover your horsebox if it is stolen.

We provide Moving Intelligence trackers which are Thatcham/Insurance Approved.

These monitored systems can detect unauthorised movement, alert a 24/7 control centre and support police during the recovery process.

Control centre staff are specially trained to liase with police to ensure your vehicle is returned as swiftly as possible if stolen.

Without a tracker fitted, less than 18% of stolen vehicles are ever recovered. When a tracked vehicle is stolen there's over 90% chance it will be recovered.

Immobilisers

Immobilisers come in different styles but achieve the same goal: Stop the vehicle from being driven without authorisation.


The immobilisers we offer work as follows:


No-Tag-No-Start

If the driver identification tag isn't present in the vehicle, the vehicle will not start. These immobilisers are part of the "S5 Ultimate" tracking device, and require a tracker to work.

Code-Entry Systems

This essentially allows you to create a "password" for your vehicle, using existing buttons, like window buttons, hazard lights and steering wheel buttons

Great! We genuinely advise you keep using it!

Mechanical security provides a useful visible deterrent and can slow a thief down. However, physical locks can be attacked, removed or bypassed, and they cannot alert you or help locate the horsebox once it has gone.

Electronic security adds another layer:

• An immobiliser prevents the horsebox from being driven.
• A monitored tracker detects unauthorised movement
• GPS location supports and drastically increases chances of recovery
• Driver recognition helps protect against theft using the vehicle’s own key

Here's some of the commonly asked questions!

Do trackers always need subscriptions?

Yes, in order to be Insurance/Thatcham approved, your tracker needs to have 24/7 live monitoring. This is what the subscription cost is for. Your tracker subscription is paid directly to Moving Intelligence, and its £130 per year with a monthly option if you prefer.

If you choose an S5 Ultimate tracker (with No-Tag-No-Start Immobilisation) and choose to cancel your tracker subscription after the first year, your immobilisation feature will still work, but if your insurance requires a tracker, you will no longer meet their requirements.

How long does installation take?

We advise allowing up to 2 hours for installation, although many of our installs take around 45 minutes.

Can I have a tracker/immobiliser fitted to my car too at the same time?

Absolutely! How is the S5 Ultimate different from the reguar S5 Tracker?

It adds immobilisation. Using the ADR (Automatic Driver Recognition) tag, the vehicle won't start without an authorised tag i.e. no tag, no start, and our control room can remotely immobilise it in a theft.

The standard S5 tracks the vehicle and sends alerts if an unidentified driver drives the vehicle.
The S5 Ultimate stops it from being driven by unidentified drivers.

What does "remote immobilisation" mean on the S5 Ultimate?

if the vehicle is ever towed or at risk, it can be immobilised remotely by the control centre in seconds.

This means the vehicle ignition will not start again, even with tags present, so it cannot be driven. Once the vehicle is back in your posession, the control centre can disable the immobilisation and you can drive normally again.


Remore immobilisation isn't part of the Thatcham S5 standard, so it's rarely mandatory, but for high-value and performance vehicles it's the strongest protection we offer.

What does "Thatcham approved" mean?

Thatcham approved means a vehicle security product has been tested and certified by Thatcham Research (an indepent testing body) to meet strict UK industry standards for performance, design, and reliability.

Category 1 (Cat 1): Combined perimeter/interior alarm and electronic immobiliser.

Category 2 (Cat 2): Electronic immobiliser only (no alarm).

Category 2-1 Upgrade: An alarm system added to a pre-existing Cat 2 immobiliser.

Category S7 (Cat 7): Standard/basic tracking systems providing reliable GPS location tracking.

Category S5 (Cat 5): Advanced tracking systems featuring driver identification tags and 24/7 monitoring.

(Yes, it's a bit confusing! Cat 5 is a more advanced and higher approval rating than Cat 7...)

Does your insurance require a tracker?

Some insurers require a Thatcham-certified tracker on high-value horseboxes or may specify a particular security category.

Our S5 and S5 Ultimate systems provide Thatcham S5 tracking, but requirements vary between insurers and policies. Always confirm the exact specification required by your insurer before purchasing.
